In 1865, when the American Civil War win inexorably towards the end of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln attempts to achieve passage of the landmark constitutional amendment that always ban slavery from the United States. But his task is a race against time, for peace can come at any time, and if it comes before the change is adopted, the returning southern states to stop it before it can be in law. Lincoln has almost no way possible to get enough votes from recalcitrant Congress before peace arrives, and it is too late. But the president is torn, as an early peace would save thousands of lives. As the nation confronts his sense of freedom of the total population, Lincoln faced his own crisis of conscience - that slavery or the end of the war.
